At 91 years, many in the banking industry knew it was a matter of days before Lazaro de Mello Brandao leaves the bank he had worked for seventy-five years. Besides, the Board he presided over had already appointed Luiz Carlos Trabuco Cappi as the Vice President and Chairman of the Board to prepare him for the Presidency. The decision to resign was therefore well anticipated, and so was the replacement to the presidency. What has triggered speculation, however, is the Chief Executive Officer position that needs to be filled following the ascension of Luiz Carlos Trabuco Cappi to Bradesco’s Presidency.
While Luiz Carlos Trabuco Cappi attempted to calm speculative activities by stating the selection procedure, industry analysts and Brazilian finance media have stopped at nothing. The speculation now revolves around seven names of senior executives working for the bank. In line with the appointment culture of the bank, the next CEO will be appointed from the bank’s talent pool. That has even intensified the speculation since the bank has lots of human capital. It has helped analysts zero down on a few individuals. Going by the look of things, however, it will be difficult to have a different individual appointed outside those identified by the media. A new Chief Executive Officer will be named by March next year.
Some of the high profile executive officials identified include Mauricio Machado de Minas, a bank executive who has been in charge of Banco Bradesco’s Information Technology. Mr. Domingos Figueiredo Abreu, a fifty-eight-year-old who has been the head of Treasury and Lending departments of the bank is the second name. Thirdly is Mr. Alexandre da Silva Gluher, the current Chief Risk Officer of Bradesco, and who together with Mr. Domingos Figueiredo Abreu oversaw the acquisition of HSBC in 2015. Mr. Octavio de Lazari who is in charge of the company’s insurance unit responsible for a third of Banco Bradesco’s profit is the fourth candidate. The fifth prospective CEO of the bank is Mr. Marcelo de Araujo Noronha who is the current head of the bank’s Corporate and Investment Banking unit. Lastly is Mr. Josué Augusto Pancini who is in charge of the bank’s branch network and its high-income segment. The list of probable individuals is compounded by Mr. André Rodrigues Cano who heads the human resource segment at the bank.
As speculation continues, what is not in doubt is the fact that Luiz Carlos Trabuco Cappi is qualified to take charge as president at Bradesco Bank. Between now and March, he will continue to juggle the two responsibilities of President and Chief Executive Officer. Luiz Carlos Trabuco Cappi is one the most distinguished officials of the bank. He has served the bank since 1969. When he joined Bradesco as a junior bank teller, the bank was still a small entity with growth prospects. Luiz Carlos Trabuco Cappi’s career has grown alongside the bank’s growth.
Between 1969 and 1983, Luiz Carlos Trabuco Cappi held positions such as Branch Manager, District Manager, and Regional Manager. In 1983, he was appointed a marketing director of the bank where he received credit for having standardized the bank’s communications and enhanced media relations. After 8 years in the role, Luiz Carlos Trabuco Cappi was tapped to take charge of the Banco Bradesco’s pension firm a position he held until 1998. This time he was made the Managing Director of the bank, and in 1999 he was elected Executive Vice President.
It is in 2003, however, that he took over career testing responsibilities, heading Bradesco Seguros where he solidified its market leader position in Brazil and Latin America. When Márcio Artur Laurelli Cypriano retired as CEO, Luiz Carlos Trabuco Cappi had almost no competition for the top job.
